What is Hernia?
Hernia is a disorder that arises when an organ gets pushed through an opening in the muscle or tissue in its place. Take for example the intestine breaks through a feeble area inside the wall of the abdomen. Hernia disease is commonly seen in the abdomen however it also gets visible in the groin, button, belly and upper thigh. Most hernias are not so fatal however they need surgical operation to get removed. Sometimes dangerous complications are seen at the time of doing hernia surgery.
Inguinal Hernia
This kind of hernia is among common types of hernia. Nearly 70 percent of hernias seen in patients is inguinal hernia. They arise in the human body when the intestines get pushed through a weak spot or tear in the wall of the lower abdomen very often in the inguinal canal. The inguinal canal is generally seen in the groin region. In the body of men this is the area from where the spermatic cord passes from abdomen towards the region of scrotum. This cord manages the testicles organ. In the body of women the inguinal canal has a ligament. It helps to hold the uterus in place. This type of hernia is commonly seen men compared to women. The reason behind this is that testicles in men descend from the inguinal canal immediately after birth. This canal closes shortly after the birth. In some conditions the canal closes properly and leaves a weak area that is vulnerable to hernia.
- Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia arises in the human body when one part of the stomach gets protruded through the diaphragm into the cavity of the chest. This diaphgram is the sheet of the muscle that gives help to breathe by drawing air and contracting it into the lungs. It makes organs of the abdomen separated from those in your chest. This type of hernia is generally seen in people above 50 years of age. Hiatal hernias also cause reflux when the contents of the stomach get leaked back into the esophagus to cause a burning sensation.
- Umbilical Hernia
This kind of hernia occurs in kids and babies who are below age of 6 months. This occurs when their intestine gets bulged through the wall of the abdomen near the button of belly. You might observe a swelling in the belly button of your child when he or she cries. An umbilical hernia is only of that type that goes cured on its own when the muscles of the abdomen become stronger by the duration when the child becomes 1 year of age. If the hernia does not get cured till this period then surgery can be done to eliminate it.
Pre and Post Surgery Instructions of Hernia Surgery
The instructions of pre hernia surgery vary from patient to patient and are given by the surgery.
- After the operation of hernia disorder the patient is admitted to the recovery room. He may be kept for a few minutes or even for a couple of hours. His anesthetist takes the decision of shifting him from the recovery room. Such decisions generally depend on the technical factors.
- The patient may be treated with nausea after the period of post surgery. In this condition if the patient vomits then also there is nothing to worry. This condition gets cured within a few hours.
The patient may be allowed to have a couple of water sips after the hernia operation. In case of condition of vomiting the liquid may be stopped giving to the patient. Liquid diets being given to the hernia patient may include milk, tea, coffee and fruit juice.
