What is Hernia?

The disorder of hernia arises when a swelling occurs in any tissue and organ inside the cavity wall in which it resides in a normal way. Hernia occurs in many kinds, most of it resides in the region of the abdomen and the groin. When we talk of groin hernias we find that they are of inguinal category. These hernias are also femoral. Other kinds of hernias are umbilical hernias, incisional hernias and hiatus hernias. Nearly 66% people show symptoms of groin hernias. Such symptoms may include acute pain and discomfort while entering bathroom, doing exercise and coughing. Such patients feel uneasy during day time but get relief during night hours. It has been found that hernias in the groin region grow more on the right side instead of left. This causes acute pain and tenderness in the infected area. Even hiatus hernia also causes burning sensation in the heart and chest pain at the time of eating.

Risk Factors of Hernia

Now let us study the risk factors that cause development of hernia disorder in the human body. These factors involve and include smoking, chronic heart disease, pregnancy, obesity, and collagen vascular disorder. Most hernias are genetic disorders and occur generation after generation. They can be diagnosed well after study of their symptoms and signs. Medical imaging technology is used to diagnose and confirm the presence of hernia in patients. However the diagnosis of hiatus hernia disorder is done with the help of an endoscope.

Signs and Symptoms of Hernia

Most symptoms of hernia are seen to develop in the abdomen region when weakness develops in the wall of abdomen. In this condition a hole or defect is seen in the adipose tissue or abdominal organ that is covered with a layer of peritoneum. Another symptom of hernia is seen in the spinal disc that results in the growth of a disease named sciatica. Even hiatus hernia is seen when the due to swelling and protruding of the stomach. Some hernias may cause or not cause pain at their site of occurrence in the human body. Fatty tissue may usually enter the site of hernia at first. Hernias are also caused due to disruption or any kind of opening in the fascia and fibrous tissue. This forms the covering of the abdominal wall.

Types of Hernia

  • Inguinal Hernia:-Most hernias occurring in the human body are inguinal hernias. They occur and grow in the inguinal region of the human body. Inguinal hernias are of two types they are indirect inguinal hernia and direct inguinal hernia. Indirect hernias occur in the inguinal canal of the human body. On the other hand direct inguinal hernia occurs on the back wall of the inguinal canal.
  • Femoral Hernia:-This kind of hernia occurs in the inguinal ligament. These hernias generally develop in the form of a hard mass of flesh and pass into the weak area of the wall of the femoral canal. The occurrence of femoral hernias is generally very high. They can be cured with the same kind of treatment procedure that is used to treat inguinal hernias.
  • Incisional Hernia:-This kind of hernia occurs due to an unhealed surgical wound. These hernias occur in the incisions of deeper parts of the human body. They are also known as ventral hernias.
  • Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia occurs in the human body when the internal parts of the human body get pushed into an area to which it does not pertain or belong. In this kind of hernia the muscular wall gets separated from the chest cavity.
